Abstract
Janina Porazińska is the author of books for children which gained the status of school readings, that is, publications which are quite widespread based on their common educational and cultural content. Their presence in the program recommendations regarding school readings since 1983 undoubtedly helped them to gain such popularity. The value of the book could be enhanced by many factors among which we can enumerate illustrations, particularly important in the education of small children. Porazińska’s publications presented rich as well as aesthetically valuable layout both in the interwar period (Stanislaw Bobiński, Michal Bylina, Antoni Gawiński, Zofia Stryjeńska, Nicholas Wisznicki) as well as in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Contemporary works of Porazińska were illustrated by Aleksandra Michal-ska-Szwagierczak or Elizabeth Krygowska-Butlewska. However, it was observed that too often other publications, that present so called ‘Disney’ style illustrations and do not care too much about the aesthetic aspect of students’ development, are chosen and recommended as school readings. Therefore, it is important to focus parents’ and teachers’ attention on these aspects of shaping the aesthetic tastes of pupils especially during their early school years.
